In late 2018, SPK added 5 sheep to our farm to help train our dogs for herding. In 2020, 3 more were added bringing our total to 10. In November 2022, 28 were added to expand our program from training our own dogs to offering herding events to the public. Starting in 2023, there will be several trainers that work on site and offer lessons. All breeds are welcome. We will be hosting herding events for several clubs through the year. If you’ve ever thought about herding, please join us for any of our open houses Spring 2023! There will be demonstrations, opportunity to meet the trainers, and course run throughs will be offered for a small fee per run. By February 2023, we will have a total 50 head of sheep for trails.
We also plan to offer lambs available to the public. Our current flock is Katahdin/Barbados/Cheviot crosses. Our sheep are bred to be parasite resistant, have excellent hooves, and sound minds to ensure long, functional lives. Over the next couple of years our program will be shifting to be more Barbados focused.
As our herding program develops, we hope to add cattle by 2024. Offering cattle will give us the ability to have sheep, ducks, and cattle on site. This will give exhibitors the opportunity to trial on all three species in one weekend!
